While Travel the world is not a food blog in itself, food is a very important part of our trips, we write about it - a lot. Sometimes food is even why we travel. For example, we have a San Diego restaurant called grenade that serves Russian and Georgian cuisine. I'm so taken by Georgian dishes I tried, those alone made me decide that I had to visit the country that makes such delicious food. So travel to Georgia that we did. Georgian cuisine is unlike any other I've experienced. There are so many traditional Georgian food and unique dishes to Georgia, and all you need when traveling through Georgia because the odds are that you will not be able to get them to order home.
Puri - პური (Georgian Bread)
Georgian food begins with bread. Bread is an essential part of the meal. Georgian bread is special. Georgian bread is baked in traditional baking bread ovens called tones. Tones are made of clay and look like the top half of the pots clay. A fire burns at the bottom that heats the walls of the oven. bread dough is cut and slapped on the side walls of the oven to cook, turning brown and bubbly. Shotis puri (შოთის პური) is the most recognizable of the loaves Georgia because of its oblong shape with pointed ends.
Khachapuri - სულგუნი (Georgian cheese Bread)
Khachapuri, Georgian cheese bread or cheese pie, is another staple of Georgian diet. There are many versions of this tasty treat, as they are a specific region, and we wish we had been able to try them all. but we tried as much as possible.
Imeruli khachapuri (იმერული ხაჭაპური) is circular and has inside the cheese.
Megruli khachapuri (მეგრული ხაჭაპური) is similar to imeruli but cheese and butter inside and outside.
Acharuli khachapuri (აჭარული ხაჭაპური) has the shape of a boat and filled with melted cheese, a raw egg and a slab or two of butter. It is served hot and whisk you cheese, eggs and butter with a fork before ripping horns and edges and dip them into the cheese mixture.
And Then there khachapuri to the pin, khachapuri shampurze (ხაჭაპური შამფურზე), where the dough and cheese gets wrapped around a metal skewer and gets cooked on the barbecue.
a different kind of Georgian cheese pie lucky we did not get to try is Guruli khachapuri (გურული ხაჭაპური). This type of cheese pie is specific in Guria region, boiled eggs inside, and is popular for Christmas
Nazuki -. ნაზუქი (Spice Georgian Bread)
Nazuki Georgia is a very special bread that is not available everywhere. Nazuki is specific to the town of Surami, a small town in western Georgia. As soon as you approach Surami ago bakeries along individual road that line both sides of the street. Nazuki is a bread scent of cloves, cinnamon and grape that is cooked like other Georgian bread, in a tone oven. Each baker's cabin has an outside booth displaying bread , versions usually plastic, and a woman standing outside waiting for a client to stop. We chose our stand and the woman brought us inside his small roadside bakery and gave us nazuki the still hot oven.
Chvishtari - ჭვიშტარი (Corn Georgian Bread)
Chvishtari is a corn bread from the Georgian region Svaneti. Chvishtari is filled with cheese. We decided the US should lay the fried cheese sticks and serve delectable chvishtari instead.
Sulguni - სულგუნის (Cheese)
Sulguni is a Georgian cheese. It is similar to mozzarella in texture. It is salty and it is stringy, so you can unpack in sections. Sulguni can be ordered on its own as an aperitif. It is also used as an ingredient in Georgian dishes like khachapuri.
Nadugi - ნადუღი
Nadugi is a Georgian appetizer with fresh cheese mixed with mint and wrapped cone in a thin layer of cheese Sulguni. At first I thought it was cheese wrapped in a crepe rather than more cheese.
Jonjoli - ჯონჯოლი
Jonjoli is a traditional appetizer interesting to Georgia. Jonjoli is pickled sprouts. They are not very pretty to look at, and they are just an acquired taste too. They have a similar taste to savory olives.
Kitris da Pomidvris Salata Nigvzit - კიტრი და პომიდვრის სალათი ნიგვზით ( Tomato Cucumber Salad Walnuts)
Salad is a term used loosely to describe a drink. A standard salad offered in Georgian restaurants is made with cucumbers and tomatoes, sort of similar to Greek salad, but without feta cheese. These salads vary depending on the restaurant. Our favorite was the salad with walnut dressing. walnuts are one of the staples of Georgia and walnut dressing is thick and creamy.
Qatmis Salati - ქათმის სალათი (Chicken Georgian Salad)
Another salad is often on the menu is Georgian qatmis salati, a simple chicken salad with chopped chicken, onions, mayonnaise, and seasonings.
Salata Olivie - ოლივიე (Russian potato Salad)
Salata olivia is technically a Russian dish, but since Georgia was formerly part of the Soviet Union, Russian and Georgian cuisines combined and some Russian dishes are very popular on the Georgian menus. Salad is a chicken salad and potatoes dressed with mayonnaise and is traditionally made for the new Year.
Badrijai Nigvzit - ბადრიჯანი ნიგვზით (Eggplant Walnut Rolls)
Another popular appetizer is nigvzit badrijai. Thin, long slices of eggplant (or aubergine) are baked until brown and soft, then a nut paste, vinegar and spices is spread on slices eggplant, which are then rolled
Georgian Pkhali Council -. ფხალი (Walnut Salad)
A pkhali card is a selection of different inputs. Pkhali is another dish that results in a salad, but it's a small appetizer. Pkhali is chopped vegetables cake and nuts to the ground. Popular choices include spinach pkhali and beet pkhali. Pkhali boards also come with appetizers you can order on their own, as nigvzit badrijai, but others, like the similar red pepper and the most delicious stuffed with walnut paste, generally are not menu items that can be ordered only
Tolma -. ტოლმა (Stuffed Vine Leaves)
Tolma is a dish that is made in many countries, generally known as dolma, including Turkey, Armenia and Greece. A mixture of meat and rice wrapped in cabbage or vine leaves. in Georgia these little green packets are topped with a sauce made with garlicy matsoni.
Khinkali - ხინკალი (soup Dumplings)
Khinkali what you eat when you're looking, relaxed cheap meal or cure a hangover. Hinkali are somewhat similar to Xiaolongbao or soup Chinese dumplings , but there are also differences . Hinkali are made with flour dumpling wrappers. they are bent so that they have little dough handles upwards. khinkali to eat, hold the ball with the handle, turn the bottom side up, and take a small bite of the dough just large enough to slurp the soup before devouring the rest of the ball. the handles are not intended for consumption, but we were told that caused quite a problem when the Russian occupation that Russians thought it was unnecessary and banned the import of flour, which means a lot of sad Georgians without khinkali While in China, you enhance the flavor of the soup dumplings with vinegar ;. Chikhirtma -. ჩიხირთმა (chicken Soup)
Chikhirtma is brothy chicken soup, but if done right, it is extremely tasty. The secret is vinegar, egg and flour. The vinegar gives the soup a delicious flavor and egg and flour it is a little thicker and heartier than your standard chicken soup.
Mtsvadi & Tkemali - მწვადის & ტყემალი (Kebab with Sour Plum Sauce)
Georgian kebab (Mtsvadi) and sour plum sauce (of tkemali) are that meet my food tastes and Rome. He loves all meat, especially pork, especially kebab. I agree with it on its own, but add a delicious sauce and I'm on board! plum sauce may sound like it's going to be sweet, but the sauce Georgian plums are sour. it comes in red, which is a little softer, or green, which is more sour both. green plum sauce is my favorite. it is delectable pie and is somewhat similar to chimichurri as it is herby as well. Apparently I'm not the only one who could eat all day just for the plum sauce. There is a Georgian proverb that roughly translates to "the plum sauce was so good we ate whole piglet. A common side dish is potato salty fries. They still provide another excuse to eat sour plum sauce.
Lobio - ლობიო (Beans)
Another common bean dish is called lobio, made with beans, onions and herbs. Each recipe we tried was a little different. Some are thick and creamy (our favorite). Some are soupy. Lobio is usually served in small traditional clay. jar
Chashushuli - ჩაშუშული (calf Stew)
Veal . Chashushuli is a traditional Georgian dish, a tomato-based stew with onions and red peppers and a lot of flavor
Chakapuli - ჩაქაფული ( Stew with white wine Tarragon)
Another Georgian stew dish as is chakapuli, and it was one of my favorites. Chakapuli is traditionally made with lamb, but it can also be ordered with the calf. This tasty dish gets its flavor layers of white wine , tarragon, green plums sour, and coriander
kharcho. - ხარჩო
Yet another traditional Georgian soup is kharcho. This soup is made with beef or chicken and can be served with or without rice. The version we had was a vegetarian and contained eggplant, zucchini, walnuts, and pomegranate and hominy served on
Trout with pomegranate sauce -. კალმახი ბროწეულის სოუსში
Even if Georgia has a sea coast with tons of rivers and lakes, the seafood are not very frequent on Georgian menus. However, we found trout on some menus. A popular dish of seafood Georgia is trout with pomegranate sauce. the trout is fried whole, nice and crispy, and served with a sweet pomegranate sauce and salty
Matsoni -. მაწონი (Georgian Yogurt)
Matsoni, or Georgian yogurt was my favorite little article. Matsoni is a fermented milk product which is served at room temperature. It is safe. It is thinner than Greek yogurt. It is served in the morning, but is also used as a marinade and sauces. Note that if you are looking matsoni the morning, you will need to ask for it by name. If you ask yogurt, you will receive the packaged yogurt as Yoplait.
Churchkhela - ჩურჩხელა
If you watched The Amazing Race this season, churchkhela then you saw. One of the teams involved challenges by churchkhela, a popular Georgian candy. Toasted walnuts, hazelnuts and east to west, are strung on a string and dipped in a flour, sugar, and grape juice mixture. the result is a reddish or brownish color of the sausage-shaped candy with a pointed end.
Karaliokis Chiri - კარალიოკის ჩირი ( Dried Persimmons)
While churchkela is the most popular sweet Georgia, another Georgian sweet that evokes childhood memories in the minds of many Georgians is karaliokis chiri, dried persimmons. Hard persimmons are cleaned, peeled, strung by the stems and dried in the sun for a few weeks until they are completely dried. the result is an item to the pruney research that is soft, sweet, and delicious.
Borjomi - ბორჯომი (Mineral Water)
Borjomi is the preferred mineral water from Georgia. You can find Borjomi bottles everywhere, and you can visit the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park and the drink straight water fountain. Borjomi is also very popular in Russia the Russians traveling to Georgia to visit the town of Borjomi so they can visit the place where their favorite water comes.
Limonati - ლიმონათი (Georgian Lemonade)
When Georgians are not drinking Borjomi, wine or beer, they drink lemonade. It seems to be the soft drink of choice, more popular than soda. Georgian Lemonade comes in all sorts of fun flavors and despite what the name suggests, has not lemons. Georgian lemonade is made with water, sugar, carbonation, and natural flavors. Popular flavors include tarragon (which is still green radioactive really delicious with a licorice flavor), pear and vanilla (which tastes like a cream soda or orange creamsicle).
Lagidze Water - ლაღიძის წყალი (Georgian Soda)
Lagidze water is a soda flavored soda that will make you feel like you've traveled back in time to the 1950s, the days of soda fountains. However, water Lagidze was developed long before. It was invented by pharmacist Georgian Mitrofan Lagidze in the late 1800s. Lagidze came up with the idea to use natural syrups with soda and creates unique flavors like cherry, tarragon, pear, and more. You can also order flavors like grape and chocolate.
Qvevri Wine - ქვევრის ღვინო
The Wine Georgia is so special, the manufacturing process, there is a tradition UNESCO World Heritage. Georgians wine 8,000 years in qvevris, huge clay pots that have highlighted the background and are buried in the soil. the grapes are crushed and the juice with the skins and stems flows into Qvevri where it ferments. Georgian white wine is a dark amber color and Georgian red wine so dark they call black wine.
Chacha - ჭაჭა (Vine Vodka)
If there is wine, there will be hard liquor made with leftover wine. Georgian chacha is a strong spirit made with the winemaking grape residue. It is sometimes called vodka and vine is quite powerful stuff.
