Scotland has thousands of castles, so it is impossible to see all the castles of Scotland in a road trip. However, this also means that no matter what route you choose, there are sure to be a number of castles along to visit. Our Scotland road trip itinerary took us to Edinburgh and north through the Highlands by Stirling, Perth, Cairngorms National Park, and Elgin. Part of this route is Aberdeenshire, who has more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK, and is still home to Castle Trail Scotland. These are 10 of the best castles in Scotland we have included in our road trip itinerary.
Edinburgh Castle
A journey through Scotland is likely to start in one of the major cities of Scotland, and ours began in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle is one of the most popular Edinburgh sites. Edinburgh is built next to a volcano, Edinburgh Castle is built on one of the vent of the volcano, it is perched above the town. When Robert the Bruce captured the castle in the 1300s, he immediately proceeded to burn. The only building remaining of the castle of origin is St. Margaret's Chapel, but many other buildings were added at a later date.
Edinburgh Castle is a large complex with lots of different things to see as the jewels in the crown of Scotland, the great hall, the National War Museum, the Royal Palace and more.
Stirling Castle
Stirling Castle is one of the most important castles and most important of Scotland. The castle on Castle Hill and was the site of many coronations, including that of Mary, Queen of Scots . His position was important because it keeps the lowest crossing of the Forth river that connects the Highlands and Lowlands.
The castle was built by James IV and has been used by a long line of kings. In 1314, Stirling Castle was controlled by the British. Robert the Bruce captured the castle and then disbanded if the English could not deal with it later. The Great Hall is one of the oldest buildings of the castle, completed in 1503. The castle and its Great Hall is out of use from 03 until 1964, when restoration began. Stirling Castle has been restored and decorated as it would have been. costumed characters bring the castle's history to life.

Doune Castle

Blair Castle
Blair Castle was the residence of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl for over 700 years. The castle was built in 1269 but underwent many improvements and renovations. The oldest remaining part is the Comyn Tower.
The current version of the castle has rich wood paneling, antiques, works of art, and a monstrous collection of weapons.
There is also a beautiful enclosed garden, Hercules Garden, which has been restored to its original Georgian design.
Braemar Castle
Braemar Castle was built in 1628 as a hunting lodge for the Earls of Mar and was then acquired by the Farquharson family. Braemar Castle is built in typical Scottish style castle, L-shaped staircase with a central tower and two wings. Braemar Castle has had many important visitors, including Prince Charles Edward Stewart. A piece of tartan which was part of plaid worn by Bonnie Prince Charlie is exhibited in the castle.
Braemar Castle is unique because it looks as it did when it was last occupied in the 1950s, which means that there are 20 century furniture and modern windows. Visitors can tour the castle either with a guide or an audio guide. The Braemar Castle grounds are where Braemar Gathering held every year.
Balmoral Castle
Balmoral Castle is where Queen Elizabeth is spending her summer vacation. Therefore, only the ballroom is open to the public. The castle was bought by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria in 1848. The property is fully funded by the Queen and belongs to the royal family. Shortly after purchasing the property, the original house was found to be too small, so the current Balmoral Castle was built. This was the favorite place of Queen Victoria to be and, looking at the surrounding view of snow-capped mountains, green hills, and a rushing river, it's easy to see why. Even if only the ballroom is open to the public, there is a beautiful walk through the castle grounds and gardens guided by an audio tour that takes about a hour.
Kildrummy Castle
Kildrummy Castle is a ruined castle in Scotland. Kildrummy Castle was the home of the Earls of Mar, who later used Braemar Castle as a hunting lodge. Kildrummy Castle is located in a strategic location along major roads from north to Moray and Buchan. The castle played an important role in the wars of independence and came twice under siege. Kildrummy Castle also made a mark on history in 1715 when the Earl of Mar supported James Francis Edward Stuart , the Old Pretender, and plot an uprising. The count was defeated and fled to France. The castle fell into disrepair for 0 years and was used as a stone quarry, but there are still parts of the castle that remain little intact.
Fyvie Castle
Fyvie Castle was built in the 13th century and is decorated in an Edwardian fantasy. It was not a royal fortress long before it became a private residence.
The castle grounds are extensive and there is a beautiful lake with a footpath around which visitors can walk.
Balvenie Castle
Another castle in Scotland is ruined Balvenie Castle. Balvenie Castle was built in the 13th century as the stronghold of Alexander "Black" Comyn, Earl of Buchan. Balvenie Castle was a noble residence for 400 years. The Earl of Atholl changed the castle of a fortress in a monumental mansion in 1550. Although the castle is in ruins, he is in good enough shape that visitors can climb to a higher level of the castle for an aerial view both inside the castle and the surrounding landscape.
Urquhart Castle
Urquhart Castle , another Scottish castle ruins, is the second most visited castle in Scotland. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the famous Loch Ness in Scotland. Urquhart Castle has a bloody history as he was involved in many battles and was seized several times. Be sure to watch the Loch Ness to see if you can spot the Loch Ness Monster.
Bonus: Broomhall Castle
Broomhall Castle is not a tourist attraction, but is one of the castle hotels in Scotland. We wanted to stay in a castle in Scotland and found on our road just outside Stirling. Broomhall Castle is a mansion that was built in 1874 and was modeled after Balmoral Castle. The castle was a home, a riding school, a preparatory school and a nursing home. It was burned in 1941 and remained in ruins until 1985. The current owners took over the castle in 03 and turned into a fun castle hotel so travelers can feel like royalty.
