Arizona has the honor of having the longest stretch of historic Route 66 in the nation. Then there is not much of Route 66 in the eastern part of the state, western Arizona has about 140 miles of uninterrupted Mother Road runs from Seligman to Topock. To celebrate 0th anniversary of Route 66 , we took a road tri p along Ariz ona Route 66 and Route 66 attractions and visited towns.

As soon we crossed the border of California / Arizona we jumped on the road 66. At over 50 miles is a long stretch of Highway 66 route. The biggest attraction Route 66 along this section is Oatman. There is plenty to do in Oatman, including visiting an authentic gold mine, walking through the historic city, and see an old-time shootout in the street. Be sure to visit Oatman Hotel where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their wedding night, and bar plastered with dollar bill. Probably the most surprising thing you'll see in Oatman is the wild donkeys that roam freely in the streets. The donkeys are friendly and are protected by federal law as symbols of the American West. This part of Route 66, especially past Oatman, is curvy, so drive carefully, especially at night.
Another point of interest along the Arizona Route 66 is the section Shaffer Fish Bowl Spring, about five miles east Oatman. Stairs lead up the hill on the side of the road to a small rock "bowl" that collects water that seeps through the rock a source.

Route 66 continues through Kingman, which is also Highway 40, then turns off the highway for another 80 plus miles.

The first roadside stop along this section of Highway 66 is Antares Point, home of Giganticus headicus. Why this great Tiki head 14 feet was placed on Highway 66, we do not know, but it is certainly the type of Americana kitsch makes a road trip of special US. Giganticus headicus is painted pink in October for the month of awareness about breast cancer. The rest of the year it is green.
A Antares is a few miles past the point hackberry, home of the famous Route 66 Hackberry General Store . Out with the old gas pumps and cars of the time Route 66. It is both a store and a museum of the Mother Road.
Beyond hackberry is a city that was once Valentine. Valentine Post Office was famous for its unique style heart shape. Today, visitors can visit Indian School Valentine, the remains of one of the many Indian schools in existence between 1870 and 1930, the pensions of schools that children of Native Americans were required to attend, leaving their homes and families behind. As Valentine's Keepers of the Wild , a rescue sanctuary for exotic wild animals are saved from or surrendered by private owners.

Seligman is where Route 66 comes close to Highway 40. Seligman has shops and restaurants and is a great stop for Route 66 souvenir shopping. Somehow Seligman has earned the right to proclaim the place of the history of birth Route 66 and is the first city along the long road of the remaining section 66 from Seligman Topock.
Heading of Seligman, Route 66 is Highway 40, so you're back on the highway. You can get the highway and follow a small length of historic Route 66 in Williams, the last city in Arizona to be bypassed. Williams was finally bypassed by the highway in 1985. Williams is a small town Route 66 to visit, filled with numerous blocks of restaurants and shops and Route 66 souvenirs. During Route 66 days Williams was also a popular gateway for travelers who want to explore the Great Canyon.

East Flagstaff past there is very little chance to drive along the original Route 66. However, there are quite a few fun detours between Flagstaff and the state line of Arizona that Route 66 travelers have benefited over their travels too.

one of those unusual detours is Meteor Crater , the best preserved site of the world's meteorite impact. The Meteor Crater is what you imagine, a very big hole in the ground. The crater is one mile in diameter and over 550 feet deep. The visitor center offers a film, exhibitions, and a piece of meteorite. After the reception center, a tour of the rim and learn about this crazy phenomenon. On the way to Meteor Crater make a stop at Twin Arrows a photo opp Route 66.
The next piece of the old route 66 through Winslow, Arizona, made famous by the Eagles song Take It Easy . Eagles fans want to be sure to stop at Standin 'on the Corner Park, with Ford plateau. Another must-see in Winslow is La Posada Hotel & Gardens , an old Harvey House has been lovingly restored into a beautiful hotel with one of the most delicious restaurants, the Turquoise Room.
Travelers might think that Wigwam Motel Holbrook looks familiar. Indeed, the Cozy Cone Motel in the Disney / Pixar film Cars was modeled after the Wigwam Motels of Route 66. The Wigwam Motel in Holbrook made so you see the resemblance. They not only have old classic car in front of the reception and booths shaped tipis, they also have a vehicle directly from Cars before, Sir Tow Mater. Wigwam Motel Holbrook was on National Register of Historic Places since 02, rated Wigwam Village # 6. Arizona a national park along Route 66, the Petrified Forest National Park . The Petrified Forest is named petrified wood that can be found in the park. Minerals have been absorbed into the wood, which was then crystallized, causing the wood to be replaced by quartz.
