With so much light pollution in the sky, there are not many opportunities for astrophotography traveling, especially when visiting the cities. When we decided to head to Bishop in eastern California this winter, we were excited about the idea of trying a photograph night since, as the city of Bishop is only a square mile, it is fairly easy to get away from the lights without having to travel very far. During our explorations, we found good places for astrophotography Bishop.
For information about camera settings for astrophotography,
read our guide photographing the North Lights.
When we were driving to our trek in Pine Creek Crags, I spotted a scraggly, leafless tree on the side of Pine Creek Road I thought was the perfect foreground for astrophotography. The mountain range of the Sierra Nevada was nearby, allowing us to start a little earlier than the mountain range of this position could block the bright light of the moon. This place is just west of the Round Valley.
Another great spot for photography, we found was the sharp curve of the road where the Round Valley Road North becomes South Round Valley Road. I wanted to get a shot with a major former Bishop of silos in the foreground.
The wide open field south with Sierra Nevada in the far background provided a beautiful night view well.
I had visions of a road leading directly shot in the snowy mountains. We found that the shooting of the out of town heading west along the West Line Street toward the mountains. When you get far enough there is little chance of driving cars at night, so you can even set up your tripod in the middle of the street. Make sure you have a look in order not to run more! We found a large withdrawal just before Highway 168 begins to turn south and head into the mountains. Since this area is a little higher altitude, it also offers views of the lights of Bishop below, but behind you in order not to affect your night photography.
One of the best places near Bishop for the only astrophotography is Valley Radio Observatory Owen . To get there, you drive south along highway 395 in Big Pine, turn left on Route 168, then left again after crossing the river. There are a number of radio telescopes that offer a look very science fiction in night shots. Here the branches of the road. Most telescopes are achieved by the left branch. However, you must go through a door that said authorized access only. If you want to add to your sites Ovro astrophotography in Bishop, email the Bishop Visitor Centre info@BishopVisitor.com and they will alert the Ovro your visit. Also note that the use of photos of Ovro for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.
The section of Route 168 between Big Pine and turn up Radio Observatory Owen Valley also offers great opportunities for astrophotography. While we were driving along this stretch, we saw some on the side of the road with their tripods that had the same idea we.
We were able to get a slight hint of the little tail of the Milky Way in a few of our photos, but as it was winter, which was the best we could get. While we suggest traveling to the bishop in the winter, because there are less people and there is more snow on the mountains, which offer a great contrast with the stars in the sky, was an opportunity for Milky Way photography Bishop.
Sometimes after a long day of hiking and sightseeing, it is difficult to crawl in the night when there is a hot bed waiting in your hotel room for you. But when Bishop visit, no matter the time of year, there are great places for astrophotography in this room is from California.
