As Residents of San Diego, when we hear someone say they "ate the best Mexican restaurant" in a state in the middle of the country, or even in the middle of California, we sign head and smile, but we sometimes our doubts about how good the Mexican food would feel. With our proximity to the Mexican border, we know what good Mexican food tastes like. We also learned from our travels that if indeed there are some very good Mexican restaurants around the country, Mexican cuisine is one of these ethnic foods that somehow loses his traditional flavors and authentic later, is made from its country of origin, and thus there is a lot of bad Mexican restaurants. On a recent weekend trip to Yuma, a city also near the US-Mexico border, we decided to take up the challenge to find the best Mexican restaurants in Yuma. We ate four and while all were good, three of them made our list. These three Mexican restaurants Yuma are completely different from each other and special in their own ways.

El Buen Taquito

We led San Diego to Yuma on a Friday night after work. Since it is only a two-and-a-half hour drive, I always forget that the change of pesky time. We arrived in town at 9:30 at night and El Buen Taquito is one of the few places open until 10:00. As we arrived in the parking lot, we were surprised that more than half of the tables were full and there was a line for takeout.

El Buen Taquito began as a taco truck, but now has a window. . . kind of. It is more of a taco truck with covered patio dining. The food is always cooked in the truck, but now there are waitresses to seat you and take your order. coffee tables and metal chairs are on the patio, some under roof and other outdoors under umbrellas.

There are four items on the menu: flautas, tacos dorado (tacos "bent"), tostadas and sopes. You can also order a cup of consommé. There are sodas, but also drink coolers filled with horchata and water natural pineapple.

Although the menu is simple, they are the four elements exceptionally well. I am always amazed by how good a potato can be taco and potato flautas are just as good, soft inside and super crispy on the outside, with just the right amount of potatoes and Tortilla. The tacos and tostadas are also deliciously crunchy and sopes are the perfect soft texture. What puts these items on top are the lettuce crunchy toppings, tomato, a generous amount of queso fresco, and the surprising pop flavor of pickled cabbage. Add a squeeze of lemon and vinegar salsa with a kick, and you have a tasty and inexpensive meal.

Chile Pepper and Mr. G’s

The Chili Pepper and Mr. G is a two-for-one as even if they are across town to the other, they have the same owners and the same menu. On our first visit to Yuma we stopped at Chile Pepper because our friends who lived in Yuma told us Chile Pepper had the best BEAN AND CHEESE BURRITOS EVER!

Chile Pepper Yuma was opened in 1954 by Juan Gutierrez and Bessie. In 1960, they opened La Casa Gutierrez, who has since closed, in the house of their grandmother. In 1963, they expanded again with Mr. G Drive-In. The restaurants are still family owned Gutierrez . The restaurants are fast food restaurants like where you stand in line, order your food, and pick it up when you're number is called.

If you are staying in or near the city of Yuma, Chile Pepper is a bit of road and highway. Mr. G has the same menu and is much closer to historic downtown Yuma. Both restaurants have a large menu, but the bean and cheese burrito is a well known staple Yuma. Some say they can tell the difference between the burrito Chile Pepper and Mr. G, but they are made from the same recipe grandmother Gutierrez and if a difference can be said, it is probably not by the average tourist.

El Zarape Duron Grill

When you drive up El Zarape Grill Duron and see the bright green stucco exterior, it looks kind of Mexican restaurant you want to visit. El Zarape Grill Duron is a great casual Mexican restaurant, but it's a sit-down restaurant with a full bar.

El Zarape Duron Grill opened in October 2012 and is a family business and execution. Pancho Duron inherited his cooking skills from his mother Rosalia Ochoa, who grew up in the Sonora region of Mexico. The menu offers a Sonoran cuisine and they proudly announce they use Certified Angus Beef and local products.

The menu includes Mexican restaurant standards like burritos, tacos and enchiladas, but the specialties El Zarape Grill Duron are seafood, as pulpo and shrimp, and steak. I ordered the Arrachera Sonorense, a skirt steak with a California chile stuffed cheese, charro beans, and grilled onions. The dish was very fresh, the steak was perfectly cooked without cartilage or chew, and beans! The charro beans were soupy and had the flavor and heat. As Romeo knows I rarely finish a meal, it was greedily eyeing my beans all the time, mentally prepared me for not completing so he can have the rest. dish of carnitas and buche Rome was superb.

We can not wait to return to Yuma to try several Mexican restaurants to see if we can add to our list of the best Mexican restaurants in Yuma, but we have difficulty that we simply want to return to the three great Mexican restaurants.
