Route 66 was created to bring people from Chicago to Los Angeles. Route 66 was a road trip popular route in the 1950s, but with the creation of highways, Route 66 has become obsolete and the towns along it could not survive being bypassed. While Route 66 went all the way to Los Angeles, following the original Route 66 through western California is quite impossible. However, there are long stretches of road in California 66 in the eastern part of the state, especially between Victorville and needles. We decided to start the new year by celebrating the 0th anniversary of Route 66 with a short road trip Route 66 and led as much to stay Route 66 route as possible in California. As we drove Route 66, we visited a number of Route 66 California road trip attractions along the way.
Wigwam Town #7
If you saw the Disney movie / Pixar Cars , you probably remember the Cozy Cone Motel, a motel on Route 66 with accommodation in what looked like the to cones. The Cozy Cone Motel was modeled after the Wigwam Motels that used to be found along Route 66 Wigwam Motels were the result of Frank Redford, who built the first Wigwam Village in 1934 in Kentucky. The villages consisted of cabins built in the style tipi teepee surrounding a larger building housing the reception. He patented the design and a total of seven villages of wigwams were built in the US, some as deductibles, and some he built himself, including the Rialto / San Bernardino. Today, three of these Wigwam Villages remain, two are on the road and 66 of which is in California. The other three are now on National Register of Historic Places , and that of Rialto / San Bernardino was added in 2012 as Wigwam Village # 7 Travelers can even spend the night in one of Wigwam Motel teepee cabins today.

Route 66 Side Trip Calico Ghost Town
After seeing what there is to see in Barstow Route 66, also known as the National Trails Highway, runs parallel along Highway 40 and enters the small town of Daggett. Here, we took a detour to Calico Ghost Town. On the way we stopped at 50 Diner Peggy Sue in Yermo for a bath tuna and chocolate real milk shake so thick that you sucked cheeks when you try to take your first sip through straw. Peggy Sue is a dinner in original roadside which was built in 1954. During the days of Route 66, there were nine stools at the counter and three cabins. Peggy Sue was restored and reopened in 1987. You can always stay at a stool at the bar, dine in one of the dining rooms, or even get your food to go sit in the park Dinersaur at the back, where you will be surrounded by dinosaurs and serenaded with playing music on the loudspeaker that will make you feel like you're a sock hop. The park is Dinersaur dog-friendly.
Just north of the dining room is Calico Ghost Town . You will see Calico spelled in white rocks on the hill. The mining town of Calico was founded in 1881 in the largest silver strike in California. The population peaked at 3,000. Calico had 500 mines and produces millions of the value of money and $ borax in just over a decade. But the money has lost its value and it cost more to extract money than it was worth. Calico and its mines were abandoned and had become a ghost town by 107.
Walter Knott , known for Knott's Berry Farm, Calico bought and restored in 1951. It has restored most of the buildings to look as they did when Calico was a mining town. There are some buildings he has left in their original state: Lil Saloon, City Office, House of Lucy Lane, R & D Co. Store, and the general store. Calico Ghost Town was given to San Bernardino in 1966 and it was declared National Historic Landmark in 1973 and proclaimed Silver Rush Ghost Town California 05.
Calico Ghost Town is a great attraction and may take several hours to visit. In addition to historical buildings and shops, there are park style attractions attractions as well, which are managed by Calico Attractions . These include a walk through the mine Maggie, with comments and recorded recess, a ride on the railway Calico Odessa, Gold panning, and a visit to the Mystery Shack where water flows upward and billiard balls roll up. Attractions are very similar to those we found in Goldfield Ghost Town while lead Apache Trail in Arizona .
If your pets are coming with you on your trip Route 66 road, you'll be pleased to know that Calico Ghost Town and its attractions are dogs. There is even a shop in town that meets pets.
On your way to Calico Ghost Town, make a quick visit to Calico cemetery, where the inhabitants of the old mining town are buried, including the last teacher of Calico, Margaret Kincaid Olivier.
Route 66 in Barstow Needles
Back on Route 66, our trip to California Route 66 road continued east. The first remarkable Route 66 highway after Daggett attraction is the Bagdad Cafe in Newberry Springs. Coffee was built in the 1950s became famous when the movie Bagdad Café was filmed at the cafe in 1987. At that time, coffee was named Sidewinder Cafe, but the name was changed after the success of the film.
also in Newberry Springs is the Whiting Brothers gas station abandoned, which closed in 1968. The petrol pumps are like ghosts of Route 66, still showing the price of gas at the time and amount of last sale.
Something you probably will not notice if you were speeding on Highway 40 is the lava field in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Just south of Highway 66 is Pisgah Crater and the flat land around it is covered in lava rock. The road becomes a bit rough here, probably because there is no real need to keep because of its proximity to the highway and the lack of cities. If the road is still rough when driving, consider taking on the motorway until you get to Ludlow. A Ludlow, Route 66 turns south, away from the highway.
Ludlow was a popular Route 66 town with its Ludlow Café, hotel motor and a petrol station and garage. Ludlow is now a ghost town Route 66. There is still a Cafe Ludlow, but everything else is pretty much ruined, including the Mercantile Building abandoned and dilapidated Ludlow near the railway tracks.
Along this next stretch of Route 66 are the remains of what was, like the Siberian cities, Baghdad and Amboy. On the side of the road in Amboy's Café and Motel Roy, who is one of the best preserved structures left Route 66 in California. While driving through Amboy, you can take a detour and visit Amboy Crater, a volcanic cinder cone surrounded by miles lava.
Route 66 curves up towards Highway 40 crosses the highway at the town of Fenner, and continues north through the town of Goffe. Route 66 turns south and ends at Highway 40, which leads to Route 66 last town in California Needles.
Take California 66 road road trip is a fun and nostalgic way to travel, but it is sad to see the remains of the cities previously. Maybe the Route 66 road trips will become a popular way to see the United States again, especially for those who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
